Experience
Hi, I'll start with the nuts and bolts: I'm a graduate student and researcher at the University of Kansas. While I've taught as a GTA and instructor of record in Anthropology and Environmental Studies at KU, I am currently working as a GRA in the Sociology department. Besides pedagogical experience in the classroom, I've tutored on the side since my time as an undergraduate. I have experience tutoring a full range from elementary school readers to a range high school student subjects, but my focus has been on test prep for the SAT (Score: 2160) and GRE (Scores: Verbal 168, Quantitative 160, Writing 5.5). Moving on to the "why I'm tutoring?" : In the classroom or in private tutoring, my focus is one of collaboration. Tutoring is often thought of as a top-down experience, but that usually isn't very helpful. My approach includes assessing the needs and goals of the student/client and working to together create a plan for success. Tutoring is a great chance to engage in learning that is more direct and focused. For many students its a chance to learn outside the classroom setting. For me, it's an opportunity to engage in a direct one-on-one kind of pedagogy that I enjoy. As I've arleady said, my focus has been on test prep. I'll be honest, I didn't enjoy taking the SAT or GRE and neither do most people. These tests can be a real pain and its unfortunate that admissions and financial aid decisions are often dependent on these numbers. However, tests like these are as much tests of experience and practice as they are tests of anything else. I find that with a little collaboration, a plan for test taking, and some knowledge about what the test is designed to look for individuals can significantly increase their chance at a great score on standardized tests.
